The Cinematic Innovations of Gene Kelly
Marc Strauss
October 23, 30, November 6, 13, 20
Wednesday, 6pm-8pm, on Zoom
Energetic and athletic dancer, actor, singer, director, and choreographer Eugene “Gene” Curran Kelly (1912 – 1996) brought his artistry to dozens of movies, Broadway and television shows during his seven-decade career. Kelly became popular for his good looks, dancing skills, and the generally likable characters that he played on screen—although, as is not commonly known, he also played villains and dark characters—as well as his unique contributions to the art of film, for which he was given an honorary Academy Award for cinematic achievement in 1952.
This course will involve a close examination of Gene Kelly's innovations and performances onscreen through viewing and analysis of DVD and YouTube clips from Kelly's twenty-one film musicals and several television specials. Through historically contextualized introductions and post-film discussions, Marc Strauss will lead students to a richer understanding of Kelly’s artistic contributions to film.
